I was fortunate to meet Joshua through my work with Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. It all happened way back in 1983 when he was a key figure in the launch of the Alternative Hair Show, an amazing event which has grown to be one of the greatest and most extraordinary fundraisers I’ve known during 48 years in the charity world. Like any major undertaking the Alternative has met many challenges along the way, and that is where Joshua, dear Joshua Galvin, has been a constant tower of strength – truly a Colossus with his support and encouragement. A man of vision he backed the Alternative from the very outset and Joshua has throughout the amazing history of this unique charity event been there for us all. There with that captivating smile and engaging personality, there with that "galvanising" Galvin drive and infectious enthusiasm, there with all the influence that a man of such high standing in the world of Hairdressing brings,... and above all there with his tireless good humour and friendship. He didn’t have to do it. As far as I am aware neither Joshua nor his family have been affected by these dreadful cancers of the blood. He did it through friendship, through his hugely generous spirit and love of mankind. It explains to me, an outsider to the world of hairdressing, just why he was, and will for ever be held in the highest affection and esteem by his profession. And, I can tell you that affection, that esteem are shared fully by me and others associated with the crusading work of the vital charity that was hugely fortunate to benefit from the support of this very, very special man, Joshua Galvin. He loved and was loved by people way beyond the bounds of his profession. Joshua was an ardent supporter of the annual Alternative children’s outing to DisneyLand, Paris. We spent many happy times there together witnessing at first hand the good that very special break did for the children and their families in face of the horror of leukaemia. What happy and enduring memories, memories of a man full of life and doing his all to create a fuller life for others. I pay you highest tribute Joshua Galvin,… a true gentleman,… a legend. It has been a privilege to know you and work with you. I thank you for your friendship. I rejoice in your life and I rejoice in what you have achieved for, and meant to, so many people - not least me and the charity I am proud to be associated with. You have made a huge difference and that is why the Alternative and the charity it supports enjoy such high standing today and are achieving so much for leukaemia and lymphoma sufferers of all ages.
